PLAINS MAIL SERVICES.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES. MANY POSSIBLE CHANGES. By advertisements at post offices the Post and Telegraph Department is now calling tenders for the cartage of mails for the three years commencing on January 1 next. A persual of the advertisement shows that it is possible for many changes to be made in the routes by which mails reach the various places on the Hauraki Plains, and while some changes, would be of distinct advantage, others would be of great disadvantage. addition to calling tenders for a continuation of all the present services, there are many alternatives'. At present mails for Netherton, Kerepefehi, and.Ngatea are dealt with on the railway travelling post office which connects with cars at Paeroa. Alternative proposals are for the conveyance of mails to these places, and Waitakaruru and Maramarua to and from Auckland, or Pokeno by the Pae-roa-Auckland service cars, or to Turua, Ngatea, Waitakaruru, and Maramarur by the Tha.mes-Auckland service cars. Either of. these alternatives would be an improvement on the present service as, the mails would arrive earlier and leave later in the day, taking a few hou'rs instead of the whole day in transit. A slight objection, however, is that parcels might be sent as far as, possible by rail, but this would only be the same as the present service. Waitakaruru and Turua would gain substantially by having mails brought by car from Pokeno or Auckland, as at present the mails remain overnight at Thames. The saving in the case of Waitakaruru would be, almost 24 hours.

While these savings are based on the .assumption that the existing timetables will prevail next year, there is no doubt that better services can b© provided by the service cars than by the railway. Tenders are also invited for the conveyance of mails between Ngatea, Kerepeehi and Netherton so as to provide a service to these places in the event of the contract going to the Thames-Auckland service cars.
