POLICE COURT.

PAEROA, THIS MORNING.

CASES BEFORE THE BENCH

At the Police Court, Paeroa, this morning, before Messrs W. Marshall and H. J. Hare, J’s.P., a middle-aged man, a first offender, was charged with drunkenness in Belmont Road yesterday afternoon. He pleaded guilty.

Constable McClinchy stated that defendant had been working on the relief works at Omahu. Yesterday morning he had got a lift to Paeroa, and had been about the town all day drinking. When arrested by Constable Dawson he had given a. good deal of trouble, and it had been necessary to handcuff him to get him to the police- station. The constable added that it was not right that a.s soon as men of the type of defendant got together a few shillings they should hang round the hotels, waste their money and annoy the. public.

Defendant was convicted and fined 10s.

A tall, heavily built man, also a first offender, was similarly charged with drunkenness in Normanby Road last night.

Constable McClinchy said that defendant had come to Paeroa with his swag yesterday morning, on his,, way to the reiof works at Whangamata. Instead of going out to his job he had hung about the town drinking, and was very drunk when arrested by Constable Dawson last night. Defendant was convicted and fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. Time in which to pay the hue was refused. SERIOUS OFFENCE. ALLEGED. A young Coromandel Native named Mick Brown, a labourer, living at Hikutaia, was charged with allegedly indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 16 years at Hikutaia on July 24. The police applied for a remand for eight days. In support of the application Constable McClinchy stated that the time was required to enable the girl’s, mother to attend, and also for the purpose of obtaining the birth certificate of the girl. Accused had been working for the Public Works Department, but he had little or no money. He had borne a good character so far as was known up to the time of the alleged offence.

A remand was granted until August 4 bail being allowed in two sureties, himself £lOO and one other of £lo'o.
