“LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.”
AN IMMIGRANT’S APPLICATION.
“FELLOWSHIP OF GOD” MEMBER
“I belong to the fellowship of God, sir” said a young man who claimed exemption from drill at Christchurch. He arrived in New Zealand from the North of Ireland a short time ago.
He told Mr H. A. Young, S.M., that he had been a member of this sect for a short time before he left Ireland. There were about 25 who attended meetings in Christchurch, and he travelled in at least once a fortnight, from a farm five miles, out, to attend the meetings. There were four overseer- in charge of tlie sect in Christchurch, and those present worshipped God by “praise and prayers.” They believed military drill was contrary to the teachings of the New Testament, which told them to love their enemies.
“You had better bring one- of your overseers along,” said the magistrate. “What do you want him for ?” asked applicant. “I suppose, if you think it necessary, I can bring him along.” “Well, you had better bring him along next Saturday,” said the magistrate, and adjourned the hearing of the application for a week.
