SOCIAL AND DANCE.

—e- — BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S EFFORT. ENJOYABLE TIME LAST NIGHT. In spite of the worthiness, of the Paeroa Beautifying Society’s efforts to raise funds' with which to carry on its laudable work there was only a moderate attendance at the Gaietj’ Theatre last night, and, strangely enough, approximately two-thirds of the people who did attend were what might be termed outsiders. It is hard to credit that, in view of the splendid work carried out by the members of the society, more local support was not forthcoming. Last night’s function proved thoroughly enjoyable, and, with Messrs W. Pennell and J. M. Crosby as M’s.C., the dancers were well looked after and everything went with a swing. The Haurakis- Orchestra was at the top of its form, and even those who did not attend for the express purpose of dancing found the music irresistible.

The euchre players, numbering 72, in the charge of Mr G. H. Taylor, played their hardest and best for the handsome prizes which were offered, and it was not until nearly 11 p.m. that the winners were known. The whole function, from the dainty decorations .to the delicious supper, showed careful and thoughtful organisation, and to the energetic secretary, Miss D. W. Butler, and her committee cons-iderable credit is due. During the supper adjournment the president (Mr ,W. Marshall) presented the euchre prizes qs follows : Ladies’, Mis Maloney first, Miss M- Verran second, Mrs Taiboys booby ; men, J. Goonan first, R. Alp second, G. McKee booby. On behalf of the society Mr Marshall extended grateful thanks to the donors- of the prizes and all who had assisted towards ensuring the success of the evening. A special tribute was accorded the ladies’ committee and friends who provided and dispensed the supper.

Owing to the poor attendance, and probably to the moderate charges for admission, last night’s function resulted in under £5 being gained for the funds, and it was generally agreed by the promoters that the net return was insufficient recompense for the labour, time, and trouble given.
