ALLEGED THEFT.
EX-PUBLIC WORKS STOREMAN.
MONEY NOT ACCOUNTED FOR. Considerable surprise was evinced ip Paeroa on Wednesday evening when it became known that W. Nealie, a young married man, had been arrested.
Nealie, who has for some years been employed by the Public Works Department as storeman at Lue Puke depot, was - arrested by Senior-Ser-geant D. A. Maclean and Constable McCllnchy near Karangahake on Wednesday afternoon, and was later brought before Messrs W. Marshall' and P. E. Bre-nan, J’s.P., at Paeroa. The charge alleged was that on March 23 last Nealie received the sum of £1 from Mr John Dean on terms requiring him to account for it to the Public Works Department, but instead he had fraudulently converted it to his own use.
The police intimated that further charges were pending, and asked for a remand.
Accordingly a remand was granted until July 28, bail being allowed accused in one sum of £5O. and a surety of £loo'. The bail was immediately forthcoming.
