The “Evening Standard’"’says that the- personal liabilities of Mr James White, the financier, who committed suicide, are estimated 'at £140,000, and the liability for stocks and shares (which are mainly connected .with his final unavailing gamble) are £470,000. It is believed that, friends who joined in the gamble are liable for £600,000. If hard words t were fatal, James Hemera, sawyer, of Kumara, would have been killed a dozen times by his angry creditors in a bankruptcy case at Greymouth last week (reports the Greymouth Star). Their .first meeting lasted for nearly two hours, and the bankrupt was put through a “third degree” examina.tion, the arguments becoming so bitter that on more than one occasion the deputy official assignee (Mr A. Nelson) had to intervene. Considerable discussion centred round an item of £2OO, which bankrupt alleged had been lent to him without security or receipt by a friend in Invercargill, and one cielitor suggested that the loan was merely imaginary. It was also alleged that bankrupt’s drinking habits were chiefly responsible for his pi'e-se-nt position. He refused to make a voluntary offer to pay £5 a month off his liabilities, and Mr W. P. McCarthy said in that case he was instructed to take the case to the Supreme Court. Bankrupt declared that he might as well be- in gaol. Finally, a resolution was carried calling upon Hemera to submit within a month a detailed statement of receipts and payments during the three- years prior to his bankruptcy, and the proceedings were adjourned until August 2.
