The necessity of reducing staff became apparent at Thursday’s meeting of t'he Hauraki Plains County Council, and the question arose as to which class of. men should be put off. The chairman observed that at the present time, whC-h there was much unemployment, the council should not continue to employ men who had farms and were merely working for the council to assist their income. While he believed in giving ratepayers preference, he thought that at the present time preference should be given to men depending entirely on the council for their livelihood. There were cases of genuine hai'dsihip among families where the breadwinner was a county casual employee. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, with instructions to go into the question of, wages as, well.

Unique weather conditions were experienced on the; Hauraki Plains on Saturday morning. There were three heavy white frosts, though most people were of opinion t'liei’e was only a black frost. At 1.30 a.m. the ground first became white, but half an hour later a fog caused a thaw. By 2.30 a.m. the fog was gone, and the ground was again white, and an hour later there was a heavy shower of rain. Another frost at 4 a.m. was melted at 6 a.m. by more rain. These observations were- made by one of. the dredgemasters oir night shift, and he states that each frost-wet rope was sufficiently frozen to be almost unworkable..
