PROGRESS OF WORKS.

ENGINEER’S REPORT,

The Hauraki Plains County Engineer (Mr F, Basham) reported to the council meeting on Thursday last as follows: — MAIN HIGHWAYS.

“From Parry’s corner to the Ke re " peehi corner surfacing has been completed. The balance of roads has been patched where necessary and kePt regularly graded in. That portion from Haley’s corner to Waitakaruru is breaking up fast on account of damage from the- waterworks operations. From the county boundary to Haley’s corner is- being repaired, and by the request of, the Public Works Department the half-mile outside the county boundary' is also receiving attention. As soon as the state of the road permits, the balance of the road between the Waitakaruru canal and Dalgety’s corner will be resurfaced.”

On the motion of the chairman the engineer was instructed to conifer with the waterworks engineer and bring down a report with reference to t-he damage to the roads and the leaving of spoil on the roadside. GENERAL. “The worst portion of the road between Parry’s- corner and Piako Road is being lightly resurfaced. The road from the Kerepeehi corner to the wharf has been resurfaced. Necessary repairs to other roads have been effected. Roads in the Netdierton riding are being graded in and rolled where necessary.” Cr. Parfitt advocated attention being given to Hopai Road. GOVERNMENT GRANTS. “Approval f.or the expenditure, of £250 (£ for £) on Mangatarata bridges- has been received. I would suggest that tenders be called for this work, and for Coxhead’s tilling, closing at next meeting.” On Cr. Harris’ motion it was decided to call tenders, the work to be commenced when the weather was suitable. PEKAPEKA WATER SUPPLY. “The engineer of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board inspected the power installation on Friday last. He Stated that the lay-out was quite in accord with the board’s regulations and with general practice with similar installations. With reference to the suggested no-volt relay, he is making inquiries as to whether a suitable instrument is on the market, as he does not know of one. He will report later. PEKAPEKA ROAD METAL. “Provisional approval to use red metal on this road hast been received from the Main Highways Board.”

TREASURER’S MONTHLY REPORT.

The Treasurer (Mr E. A. Mahoney) reported to the Hauraki Plains County. Council on Thursday as follow s:— “The riding balances, as per attached statement, with arrears of general rates outstanding and amounts, claimed from the Main High ways Board, at June 30, were : —■ “Turua: Balance £548, general rates outstanding £794, claimed from Main Highways Board —1 Kopuarahi, £1496, £B4l, and £530 ; Horahia, £940, £779, and £l2O ; Kerepeehi, £349, £1059, and £44 ; Netherton £197, £9Ol, and £93 ; Patetonga, £763, £909, — ; Ngatea, £219, £447, and £126 ; Pipiroa, £670, £9lO, and £714 ;■ Waitakarur’u, £775, £923, and £B. “The engineer informs me that approximately £lOOO is being claimed from the Main Highways Board in addition to the above for the quarter ended June 30, 1927. “Summonses, have been issued for 1924-25 rate arrears for which no satisfactory arrangement for payment has been made. Native rates' amounting to approximately £6OO have been placed in the hands of Mr T. S. Withers, Auckland, who specialises, in the collection of native rates. He will take charging ordei® against the lands concerned. “Subsidy has been applied for on general rates for 1926-27. LOAN ACCOUNTS. “The following are the balances of loan accounts, at date, all being credit balances with the exception of the Netherton Roads 1925 (£765 Ils 2d debit). : — “Turua-Netherton, £174 2s 4d; Netherton Roads, £355 5s 10'd ; Netherton Roads, 1925, £765 Ils 2d; Engineer’s House, £1 9s 10d; Horahia Roads £2000"; Waitakaruru Roads, £53 15s 2d; Maukoro Bridge, £lO 15s ; Pekapeka Water, £lOl 7s lOd ; Turua Town District, 15s Bd.

“Interest and sinking fund will absorb £lOO of the Pekapeka Water supply Loan balance.

“The Horahia Roads Loan balance has been on fixed deposit for six months past and has just matured. I would ask direction of the council as to whether this; amount is to be used for further road.work or to bo applied to the sinking fund in ttecordunce with section 8 of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1926.

“The sum of £312, part of the Netnei’ton. Roads Loan credit of £355 15s lOd, may be applied to the- over-ex-penditure on certain works in the Netherton 1925 loan, thus reducing the debit to £453 Ils, 2d. This debit will have to be advanced temporarily from the General Account, pending the raising of further loan money, or be charged to the Netherton riding. “The receipts for the month totalled £1895 13s 7d, including £5ll 8s 9d from miscellaneous licenses, etc., £745 7s 8d front rates, and the balance from subsidies, grants, interest, etc.”
