PAEROA LOAN MONEY.
DETAILS OF EXPENDITURE. STATEMENT BY MAYOR. The following report on the 1920 street improvements and stormwater drainage loan was presented, by the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) at the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last night:— “On February 11. 1920, the ratepayers authorised the raising of £11,250 for street and footpath formation and improvements and stormwater drainage.
“Of this amount £912 was-expended on engineering fees and preliminary expenses (of which £Bl2 was incurred before 1920), and the sum of £174 on piping the. large drain from the old station entrance to _ the level crossing, and approximately £lOO in laying an extra 12in storm-water drain across the Domain. t ' “The sum of £772 10s- has been ab- { sorbed in the first year’s interest and ’ sinking fund, and £35 13s 6d in costs , of raising the loan and printing debentures ; and on June 28 there was . a credit of £lB7B 3s lOd and approximately £278 worth of material on hand.
“These amounts leave a balance of approximately £7lOO, which has been expended on street and footpath improvements. Following is a list of the work which has been done out of this amount: —
“Formation, metalling, and bituminising on the penetration method’ King Street, part of Willoughby Street, and part of Russell Street and Dulcie Street; formation of part of Russell Street from Willoughby to Wood streets, and Bennett Street from Thames Road to Mr Gorrie’s house; formation, metalling, blinding, and rolling of Coronation Road, Lower Hill Street, part of Bennett Street, parts of Flora and Bush streets, part of Moore Road, Hill Street from Cullen to Kennedy Street, George and Dearie streets;, Norwood Road, part ofWilloughby Street from Victoria Street to Mrs Forbes’, Nahum Street, King Street extension to Corbett Street, Aorangi Road, Raroa Road, Ainslie Road (to which the Government contributed 400yds of. metal), Belmont Road from Taylor’s Avenue to old station entrance, Normanby Road, south-west side from Arney Street to post office ; in front of post office, and Princes Street to post office mail entrance.
"Footpath formation and gravelDng. with kerbjng and channelling, has been carried out in Moore Road, Belmont Road near Paeroa Hotel, Normanby Road from Commercial Hotel to round post office, and both sides of Princes Street from Wharf Street to Queen Street. At the intersection of Belmont Road with Station Road the corners have been rounded off by the requisition of the necessary land and the kerbing and channelling and for-, mation of footpaths and the metalling of the carriageway. “A general survey of this work reveals the fact that, outside of the heavy expenditure on Coronation Road to Lower Hill Street owing to the removal of the railway station, the money has largely been expended ih giving access to ratepayers in the residential area, where maintenance and depreciation will not be heavy* and where conditions were bad but rateable values Ipw. "With the exception of a portion of Belmont Road and a few feet on the south side of Normanby Road none of the amount has been' spent on continuations oif main highway's, but it is now proposed to expend the balance of the loan on Normanby Road. "This record is one of which the council may be justly proud, and I am convinced that the ratepayers have obtained even more than 20s> in the £ value for money’ expended out of the Street Improvements Loan." On the motion of Crs. Edwards anil Flatt the reoort was received.,
