AN UNUSUAL POSITION.
MODEL FOR SCHOOL OF ARTS. MAN FOUND WILLING TO FILL IT. Many and varied are the jobs that are open to the unemployed, provided they are willing to accept them. Since the relief depot was opened in Armagh Street, Christchurch, numbers of men have been found employment at gardening, chopping wood, and even carrying sandwich boards, but the most unusual position of the lot that the depot was called on to fill was surely that of a model for the School of Arts for a week.
Mrs Herbert, who is in charge of the depot, endeavoured to find a mqn who woudl consent to pose, but whent those she approached learned that part of their duty would be to appear before students of both sexes in a pair of trunks they would suddenly think of urgent business elsewhere, and get away from the depot as quickly <iS' possible. Just as she had begun to despair of finding a suitable man, her luck turned, and one who ■had been “up against it” for some time agreed to offer his services.
“I am not much to look at,” he admitted modestly, “nor am I a good stamp of a man, but if they are willing to give me a try-out, I will take the job.” He did, and evidently made a success of it, for after a trial he wag engaged for seven weeks. “It is not too easy though,” he told Mrs Herbert, “as a man has: to pose for fifty minutes before he gets a spell, and then it is only for ten minutes.” 1
