I DRINKING BY CONSUMPTIVES. PROBLEM FOR HOSPITAL BOARD. Men who Indulge in alcoholic drinking at the Sanatorium and upset the smooth working of the institution are discharged from it, and thus they return to the general community without completing their treatment. The matter referred .to came up at the last meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. The public health committee reported that during the month of. May two patients had to be discharged from the Sanaorium for indulging in alcoholic drinking in the institution. “What is the position of these men going to be asked Mr C. Carr. “I came across a man the other day who was discharged for drinking. He was knocking about the.- town, a menace to the community, and in the end I think he was sent to Otaki. We cannot have these undesirables knocking about in the community. It is a very serious thing.” The chairman of the board (Mr H. J. Otley) agreed that it was a very serious thing. It v/as impossible to accept all patients. The board was trying to do the best thing. The question was whether -the hospital was going tb carry cut the duty given it or whether these men were to be allowed to upset the institution.
