K«repeehi 3. Turua 3, v. Kopuarahi 3. The Paeroa Rugby Union’s senior and junior competitions were advanced to the semi-final stages on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, and there was a large crowd of supporters and the general public present at the domain. The surprise of the day was the defeat of the West junior team by its old rivals. East. EAST V. SUBURBS. The senior game fast and fairly open, and there were some flashes of good play at times. East gained a two-point win by defeating Suburbs by 9 to 3. This, however will not materially alter the position of East, as Suburbs with seven points is leading West by one point, while East has only a total of three points. To many it was rather a surprise that East should have, defeated the visitors on Saturday, but the winning team,played good football and well deserved the- victory. The teams, which were evenly matched, lined out as follows : East.—C. Treanor, J. Catlin, H. Wright, E. Moore. V. Murphy, D. Smith, R. Hounslow, W. Nealie, T. Lovatt, R. Thorp, R. Bullock, S. Boyer R. Smith, T. Pullar, E. Johnson.

Suburbs.— W. Bennett, A. Morrison, P. Corbett, B. Rare, J. Mcßae, L. Rice, J. Tanner, B. Tapu. F. Patterson, J. Robson, T. Killgour, S. Wyatt, W. Vedder, M. Brown, D. Brawn. Suburbs followed up the kick-off, but R. Smith cleared from a mark. In. loose play near ihalf-way Tapu was penalised for holding, and Bullock sent to Suburbs’ twenty-five flag. The throw-in was received by A. Morrison-, who carried into neutral territory where a scrum was ordered. A forward rust headed by Vedder and Brown gave the home team a busy time defending until Wright eventually cleared to neutral territory. From a line-out D. Smith secured and sent out to Murphy, who carried up before delivering to Moore, who found the line near half-way. Ra.re received from the line-out, but his kick was blocked. Play was open and in neutral territory for the remainder of the quarter. After the change-over play went to East’s territory, but Nealie secured and centred. Good following up by Pullar and Johnson resulted in tight

play at the other end of the field un*til Moore had an unsuccessful dropkick at goal. From the drop-out R. Smith secured and sent a long pass to D. Smith, who dived over the line near the corner. R. Smith’s kick failed. East 3, Suburbs 0. In a loose rush Patterson cqrripd up, but Treanor made a good save. In a loose scramble which followed Boyer infringed and Wyatt kicked A good, goal. East 3, Suburbs 3. Loose play in neutral territory followed until ' Pa.tterson gained ground by finding the line near East’s twenty-five flag. A scrum followed the line-out and D. Smith secured and started a fine passing rush. Catlin mulled the pass inside Suburbs’ twenty-five qnd Mcßae returned to the line at half-way. Ricereceived the ball and put his. team on the attack. An East forward committed a breach, but Wyatt’s kick fell short, and half-time was sounded with play in East’s, territory. On resuming after half-time East attacked, but Corbett marked and cleared. Murphy returned for Rare to mark. Nealie secured the ball and made a good run, but his pa.ss to D. Smith was forward. Mcßae took the kick, but Bullock intercepted and sent out to Thorp, to Moore, who failed with a drop-kick at goal. Keeping up the pressure. East gained a pena’ty kick and Moore converted from a difficult angle. East 6, Suburbs 3. Killgour made a run down the field, but after a five-yards scrum Ease forced. Nealie put East on the attack, and after some time play he again obtained possession and passed to Moore, to Catlin, who ma.de a nippy run to score in the corner. Moore’s kick went wide.- East 9, Suburbs 3. The final round saw the home team strongly attacking, but the Suburbs backs were equal to the strain. In loose play Patterson ' secured and -made a good run, but he was unsupported and finally kicked to the line in East’s twenty-five. D. Smith received from the line-out and, supported by Boyer, quickly transferred play to the other end of the field. Good following up by Rice enabled him to return the ball to the halfway flag. An exchange of kicks terminated in Loratt sending Catlin away for a run down the line, but he was pushed out near the corner. A scrum in front of the posts -followed, but Tanner nicked up and sent to the Hne in East’s terji'.ory. In tight play a fiveyards scrum was ordered, but Pullar, with the ball at toe-, returned to neutral territory. Corbett received from a line-out and sent to Rare, to A. Morrison, but D. Smith saved by kicking to the line. A kick from a mark by W. Bennett was taken by Nealie, who cleared. Vedder and Brown worked play into East’s twenty-five, but relieved the pressure with a iuiig kick to the other end of the fieldPatterson returned to the line near ihalf-way, and Tanner and Robson continued the advance until Lov-att intercepted and returned to the half-way fla.g. Mr D. G. McMillan was referee. Of the local -forwards Nealie, R. Smith, and Pullar were the pick, while ’ Treanor, D. Smith, and E. Mobre played solidly in the backs. Th© outstanding forwards in the Suburbs team were Patterson, Wyatt, and Killgour, and in the back division Rice, Mcßae, and Corbett were the pick.
