PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ROUTINE BUSINESS. A meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Saturday night, the chairman (Mr W. Power) presiding over Messrs. J. H. McDonald, W. N. Chamberlain, R. J. Thorp, C. H. Pascoe, W. Purdie, W. Smith, and the secretary (Mr W. L. Lawrence). The headmaster (Mr G. H. Taylor) was also in attendance. INSURANCE OF EQUIPMENT. A letter was received from the Education Board advising that the Government Insurance fund covered school buildings and necessary school furniture, but did not cover such equipment as books and stationery, sports material and apparatus, or other equipment provided by local effort. The board considered that committees should be advised of the position in order that adequate cover should be taken over libraries, gramophones, and pianos. It was resolved to take out a policy for £lOO on the books, gramophone, and records, and a separate policy of £5O on the piano in the infants’ room. BIBLE IN SCHOOLS, The board wrote advising that it had received an application for the N.Z. Bible id. Schools League to be afforded facilities for obtaining from the school registers the names and addresses of parents and pupils. The board advised that it had resolved that head teachers be authorised to allow accredited representatives of the league to copy the names and addresses from the school registers subject to the consent of the school committees concerned. Before permission was granted, however, the representative of the league must present to the headmaster an accrediting letter from the league, with an endorsement thereon from the school committee giving consent. A lengthy discussion followed, during which members spoke for and against the Bible in schools. Finally, it was resolved by four, votes to three that permission to obtain the names and addresses be declined. EXEMPTION GRANTED. A parent’s application for exemption from schoool of a daughter on account of illness of the mother was received. After, due consideration it was decided to grant exemption until after the August holidays. ASSISTANT TEACHER. In reply to the committee’s letter of protest against the proposal to transfer Mr Callaghan the board wrote advising that the matter would receive consideration when the attendance for 'the current quarter was knowm. VISITING COMMITTEE’S REPORT. On behalf of the visiting committee Mr McDonald reported that the complaint by Mr E.' N. Davies that storm water from school property in Willoughby Street had been investigated. The water was following a natural evater course and no action was considered necessary. Attention was drawn to several flue and water pipes that required renewing in the main building, and it was resolved to obtain a quotation for the work and submit an application to the board with a request for a special grant sufficient to cover the cost of the work. DENTAL CLINIC MATTERS. A round-table talk ensued on the progress made in connection with the erection of the dental clinic and the matter of financing the remainder of the work. Mr Pascoe offered to collect subscriptions from those parents who had signified their willingness to contribute. The secretary reported that he had received a donation of £2 2s from an anonymous person, and the amount was accepted with thanks. Although splendid work had been done by the system of working bees, it was agreed that sufficient progress was not being made, and in order to expedite the erection of the building Mr Chamberlain was authorised to employ assistance. Accounts amounting to £74 10s 3d on the clinic fund were passed for payment. Mr Silcock reported that through the influence of Mr P. Williams, supported by the local Orphans’ Club, he believed that the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ 'and Warehousemen’s Association would be prepared to bring a concert party to Paeroa during August. The proceeds from the concert would be donated to the dental clinic fund, but the committee would have to pay al) expenses.
A sub-committee, comprising Messrs
Silcock and McDonald and the secretary, was set up, with power to make suitable arrangements. The secretary reported that the dental nurse appointed to the Paeroa clinic had arrived, but was doing relieving work at Ngatea until such
time as the local clinic was ready for occupation.
