PAEROA-POKENO LINE.
TAURANGA COUNCIL’S OPINION. DEVELOPING OF BAY OF PLENTY. At the last meeting of the Tauranga County Council the chairman (Cr. King) moved : — “That the Government be asked to favourably consider the early construction of the Paeroa-Pokeno railway deviation, believing it to be of primary importance in the development of the whole of the Bay of Plenty, as it would shorten the railway journey to Auckland by 46 miles compared with the present route via Morrinsville, thereby tending to the increase of business on the East Coast Raiway line.” The chairman, in speaking to the motion, said the line would mean a reduction in freights on fertilisers and general goods, and would reduce passenger fares.
Cr. MacDougall Seconded. He said the Paeroa-Pokeno railway would mean that fat stock could be sent more quickly to the Auckland market by that line than by any other route. Cr. Darragh concurred, and said the line would be utilised for the trucking of fat lambs.
Cr. Tanner spoke in support of the line, and the motion was then put and carried unanimously.
