The Thames Valley Electric Power Board’s reticulation area now covers 1529 circuit miles. The number of consumers on the flate rijte is 2719. and on the meter rate 1975, exclusive of the Thames and Te Aroha boroughs, which contain 1033 and 616 consumers ) espectivcly. The board’s connected load of 15,181 kiloivatts at March 31 last is equivalent to 20 200 horse-power. “Too many secretaries of trades unions are making a serious drain on the funds, so that for the whole of the Dominion only £4OOO yearly of the total sum paid in contributions remains for fighting in the workers’ cause,” declared a prominent Dunedin Labour supporter this week. He gave figures in support of his contention that the unions should organise and work together under one secretarj’ or more. He attacked the present r.vstem of unionism by which an of secretaries was, he said, drawing salaries which left nothing for helping the unemployed or for political campaigns. “There are about 430 trade unions in New Zealand and nearly all of these can** paid secretaries. The subscriptions collected amount to about £24,000,” states the official. “In Dunedin alone the weeklj- salaries of the trade union officials and their assistants amount to about £56.
