PATETONGA BURGLARY.

SEARCH FOR «. W. SCOTT.

DISAPPEARANCE OF THE SUSPECT

A stranger answering to the description of George William Scotti, the prisoner who escaped from Mt. Eden Gaol on April 27, and who was seen and pursued at Pukekohe, was seen at Patetonga on Thursday last. A burglary committed at Patetonga on Friday morning is attributed to him.

The stranger called at the farm of Mr W. G. Cotton, Morrinsville Road, on Thursday evening, seeking work. He was given a meal. About sundown he was seen nearer Morrinsville-. On Friday morning, while Mr and Mrs Cotton were milking in a shed about nine chains .from the house, the residence was entered and ransacked. A small sum of money, some jewellery, a suit of clothes, a pair of boots, and bread and butter were the articles taken. The stranger has not been seen since.

Constable Devereaux, of Kerepeehi, to whom the matter was reported, was quickly’ on the scone, and though the whole district was scoured no trace of the fugitive was found. It is presumed that he has passed over the hills to the district with which he is more familiar.

All the settlers of the district have been notified to keep a close watch for a stranger, and the police are still investigatinc.
