PLAINS HOCKEY.
THE LADIES’ CLUBS. GREAT KEENNESS SHOWN. Hockey is booming on the Hauraki Plains this season,-, and it is probable that there will be seven ladies’ teams taking part in a competition shortly. Last season there were three clubs, but with the suggestion of an association and an organised competition for a trophy donated, for the purpose by Mr J. H. Nicholson, of Kerepeehi. clubs were formed at Turua and Kopuarahi, and each of these new clubs hopes to be in a position to field twc teams. Each club has approved the idea of forming a hockey association, ‘ and has appointed delegates, but apparently no one has yet taken the initiative in calling an inaugural meeting. The Kopuar.ahi club is now suggesting that such a meeting be held at Ngatea next Tuesday evening. On Saturday last the. Kerepeehi and Ngatea teams met at Ngatea and the match, which was played in the rain, resulted in a draw —one goal each. On the same day the Kopu’arahi and Waitakaruru teams met at Wai,takaruru, the home team winning by two goals to nil. On Tuesday evening the Kopuar.ahi club held a very successful dance' and euchre tournament in the schoolroom the attendance numbering 80-odd Good dance music was provided by the Kopuarahi orchestra. Mr and Mrs L. Henwpod were the winners of the euchre tournament, with Mrs Hollard and Mr. B. McMillan as "boobies." A similar function was held by the Waitakaruru club last Monday evening, the dance being the jolliest held on the Plains for some time. Mr J. - Neate, the popular Plains M.C., had been instructed to "make things go," and to introduce, as many novelties as possible, and this he did with enthusiasm. Elderly matrons declared that the dancers had gone mad, but they entered into the fun with the youngest flappers, and the old building rocked on its foundations when the 80-odd dancers barn-danced in unison or "Charlstoued.” until the Ngatea orchestra, with the exception of the saxophonist, went on strike, demanding a spell. The Monte. Carlo waltz was won by Mr A. Taylor and Miss Jowsey, and the spot waltz by Mr and Mrs Hunter. The euchre tournament was won by Mrs C. W. Harris and Mr F. Nicol, while Mrs Hunter and Mr Poley received the consolation prizes. At a meeting in Turua on Friday evening attended by over 50 persons it was decided to form a ladies’ hockey club. Mr R. D. Macklow was appointed president, Mr A. Aberhart and Mrs McKenzie vice-presidents, Miss L. Aberhart secretary, and Mrs Watts and Mr R. D. Macklow delegates to the proposed Hauraki Plains Hockey Association. All these officers, Misses Truelove and Charteris, tvill be the executive committee. It is thought that the club will be able to enter two teams in the interclub competitions. Arrangements were made for the club to purchase hockey sticks for sale to players. It is intended to hold a series of dances during the winter.
