PATETONGA ROAD.

QUESTION OF DEVIATION. PETITION FROM RATEPAYERS. Fifty ratepayers of the Patetonga riding petitioned the Haurakj Plains County Council yesterday asking that a poll be taken by means of a postal ballot .within the Patetonga riding to decide the route of the main road between the Patetpnga and Ngatea ridings.

The petition suggested that the question be whether the existing road ailong the foothills be the main road or whether the proposed road from the lower Patetonga road to the Ngarua Road near the flaxmill be constructed and declared a main highway. In the event of the ballot favouring the proposed deviation, the petitioners asked that the council immediately proceed with the necessary formalities in connection with the legalisation of the n®w road, apply for a Public Works grant for formation, and urge the declaration of the Pate-tonga-Ngatea road via the deviation as a main highway. The petition was prepared by Cr. J. F. Mayn, and presented by him to the council. He explained that the people of Patetmga were divided on the matter, though they were unanimous in desiring a main highway through the district. He moved that the wishes of the ratepayers be

granted Cr. Madgwick asked would it not be preferable to set up a small commission of inquiry. The chairman favoured the postal ballot as being more likely to get a better expression of opinion. In reply to Cr. Hicks the chairman said that every ratepayer would re<ceive one ballot paper. -Cr. Parfitt asked what would be the position if the ratepayers favour--cd the deviation while the Highway Hoard favoured the MU. The chairman said that the ballot ■would not be binding on the council, but was merely intended to get an expression of opinion from the people. -Cr. Mayn said that it might be advisable to get an estimate for conthe deviation and an estifor improving the hilil road. h The motion was carried, and the. chairman, clerk, and CrJ Mayn were deputed to attend to the matter.
