COUNTY WORKS.
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS. ENGINEER’S REPORT FOR APRIL. The following report was submitted by tlic acting engineer (Mr L. E. Shaw)at Thursday’s .meeting of tlic Ohinemuri County Council “The. crushing oi’ metal at the Komata reserve has been carried on as usual, the amount crushed being 350 cubic yards of IJ&in metal and 300 cubic yards of smaller size, making, a total of 650 cubic yards for 20 ! days crushing.
“So as to make a test of metal in the council’s quarry at Owlmroa for top-dressing of main roads 20 cubic yards of spawls were carte.d to thecrusher and crushed down to %in chips and placed on the PaeroaTha.mes main road opposite Mr J. Morrison’s farm.
"’renders were called for the cleaning of drains in the Kaimanawa riding, and as satisfactory prices werereceived the work has been let to four separate contractors. Tenders were also called for three small metalling contracts in the Waikino riding. This work has been let at reasonable prices.
“The metalling of portion of Old Te Aroha Road, authorised at the lust meeting of the council, has been completed. The repairing of tiie Waihj-Tauran-ga road from the Waihi borough boundary to the. Tauranga county boundary has been carried out and is now in fair order.
“The contract fpr metalling Pcvreal’s Road, Mangaiti riding, has been completed, and is ready for inspection by the- Public Works Department.
“The highway estimates asked for by the Main Highways Board for the months of April, May, and June have been sent forward.
“The grading of the clay roads in the Waikino and Waihi ridings was completed early in the month. The re-grading-and sanding of, the unmetalled portion of the Hamilton-Paei on main road, as recommended by the Highways Board, will be started as soon as the men can be taken from tlie- crusher, which will be in about a fortnight’s time. As the blade, of the grader is’badly worn and of very little use for grading soft roads I would recommend the purchase of a new one.
"Tlie widening of Rahn Road and tire erection of a fence, as asked for by the residents in the vicinity who use tliis road has been carried out by the council’s workmen. “Settlement Road, Kaimanawa riding, is in need of repairs, and at least 75 cubic yards of metal is required. An offer lias been made by a settler to supply, deliver, and spread on the road gravel at 8s per yard, and as this gravel is of good quality I would recommend the council to accept the offer.
“In answer to an application made by Messrs Millar Bros, to have tlie old road up Peel’s Creek made passable, I may state that in company with Cr. Robinson 1 visited this road and found that the- cost of reconstructing was out of the question. I would suggest that a man be employed on the Komata-Maratoto road for two weeks to clear logs, slips etc., thus giving Millar Bros, good access to their section.”
