POLICE COURT.
LOCAL SITTING THIS MORNING. a WEEK-END CASES DEALT WITH. At the Paeroa Police Court this morning, before Messrs W. Marshall and W. F. North, J’s.P., a man named Peter Anderson pleaded guilty to being drunk in Victoria Street, Paeroa. on Saturday. Constable McClinchy stated that the defendant had made himself a complete nui,sance lately, going from one hotel to another. He asked the Bench to inflict the full penalty of the law. The justices soon disposed of the aggressor, who was convictc-1 and fined £1 or 48 hours’ imprisonment.
Another man, Michael James O’Riley, pleaded guilty to being drunk on. Saturday night. Constable McClinchy stated that defendant had been drinking about the town for some time, and did not seem to have any visible means of ’support, and would not work.- “There is one thing,” remarked the constable, he is an- old man, and it seems a pity.” In defence the defendant said that he had been looking for work. He would admit having a few drinks, and pleaded for a chance to get out of the town. On the first charge he was convicted and discharged, and on the second was sentenced to seven days in Thames Gaol. A charge of assault was preferred against a local resident, but the hearing was adjourned until Monday. 16th inst. Bail was granted on two sureties of £lOO each.
