Thefts of handbags from shop counters have, been numerous lately '(says the Christchurch "Press”). customers place their bags on counters, and a moment later the bags disappear. Anything of value is abstracted, and the bags are thrown away. One was found on the river, bank and two in rights-of-way. In one case a shop assistant who had just received her wages placed her purse in a small drawer near the side -nf the counter, and ti was quicklj stolen.
