THE STOCK INSPECTOR.
(With apologies to John Earle.) He is the Viceroy of the Saleyard, and no man attends more livestock sales than he. He. is "the King s officer. His jurisdiction extends over the two counties, where he has commission for tiie poor and sickly and leaves the prime and f.at at liberty. No buyer is more independent than he who allows no one to 1 acquire the cattle he seeks who fixes his own price and pays half the amount. No man bids against him, and he may not sell, for the days of his acquisitions are numbered. His brand is the broad arrow and -his cheque a State warrant. On the Hauraki Plains he is continually active, yet no man admits “truck” with him. His presence is a disgrace, a necessity, and a boon. Note. —Almost 8 per cent, of the cattle yarded at the last stock sale-on the Plains were condemned by the r'cck inspector.
