M""The annual meeting of the Thames Valley Rugby Union was held at Paeroa on Thursday evening, the president, Mr J. W. Silcock, presiding over Messrs. F. Lockyer, A. Hill and G. Lindsay (Piako), C. S. Foster, W. Madgwick, and H. L. Berney (Hauraki Plains), J*. J. Callaghan, McPherson, and Walmsley (Waihi), Mettam, CPotter, and R. Hodson (Paeroa). ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report stated : — “Enumerated is the turnover ahd credit balance for the. last six years . 1921, £lO6 16s 2d, £23 3s 8d; 1922, £176 17s 6d, £lB 6s Hd ; 1923, £163 Is 7d, £6 Os 3d ; 1924, £75 15s 7d £l6 Is 7d ; 1925, £2Ol 11s 6d, £ll 7s Id ; 1926, £4BO 2s 6d, £ll3 6s lid. You will notice by the balance-sheet that our funds are well in hand, showing —a credit balance of £ll3 6s lid. Duiing the season we sent pur representative. team on a tour which was successful. • . “Poland Memorial Cup. These matches were contested very keenly, and resulted in the Piako team winning for the second year in succession. “Sharebrokers’ Cup.—For the first year since the inauguration of this ' competition the cup has been competed for in home and home matches. Three, teams —Paeroa, Piako, arid Waihi —competed. Paeroa proved the winners of the competition, and theii margin of points in respect of all matches augurs well (apart from the high standard of football witnessed) ' for the future of football in the district. “Your committee wishes to thank the Referees’ Association for assistance in furthering the game, Mr Bain for the use of his rooms, the Press for their detailed reports, etc., which have kept the public ever in touch with the movement of the union, and . the selector, apd football enthusiasts, for subscribing towards our touring fund.” A report was also submitted on the tour of the representative team by the manager, Mr J. W. Silcock. SUB-UNION BOUNDARIES. The Hauraki Plains delegates asked for a statement as to the exact location of the boundary between the Hauraki Plains and the Paeroa unions. Mr Potter stated that the Paeroa boundary was the Pekapeka road, and the area, to the Wha'repoa road was neutral ground. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the president commented on the satisfactory’ financial position. The cost of the tour of the representative team was £2lO 17s sd, a sum well within the amount estimated. Mr Lockyer commented on the large expenditure on car hire. The president explained the expenditure, which was incurred in connection with the visit of the Hawke s Bay team. Mr Callaghan expressed the opinion that in future visiting teams should be given a lump sum for their expenses, instead of the fast method of meeting all the accounts. Concerning the. financial position generally, congratulated the executive on the satisfactory year’s operations. ' Mr Lockyer explained that the arrangement made in Wellington was . i for the Hawke’s Bay match to be played at Te Aroha, where the players were to be billeted free of cost. However, the match was altered to paeroa and the visitors were sent to hotels for four days. Mr Silcock moved that a vote of appreciation be accorded Mr J. H. Nicholson for his services. Seconded by Mr Lockyer and carried. Mr Callaghan congratulated Mr Silcock on his part of the work, ami moved that the union record its thanks and appreciation of Mr Silcock’s services. i Seconded by Mr Foster and carried. OFFICERS. The following officers*we.re appointed for the season: Patron, Mr H. Poland ; president, Mr J. W. Silcock ; vice-presidents, the presidents of the sub-unions, Messrs W. Marshall (Paeroa) W. R. Lawrence (Te. Aroha), H. Dent (Ngatea), and S. Walmsley (Waihi) ; secretary, Mr J. M. Crosby to continue until another is found by the local executive; treasurer, Mr J’H. Walmsley; delegate to N.Z.R.U., Mr F. Lockyer. On the motion of Mr Walmsley it was decided to vote the retiring secretary, Mr J. M. Crosby, £7 7s. In returning thanks Mr Crosby stated that the amount of work was such that an honorarium should be paid, though he had done the work for the good of the game. f POLAND CUP COMPETITION. The Hauraki Plains delegates advocated an alteration in the conditions of the Poland Cup competition, so as to reduce the amount of travelling. .The president pointed out that the past season was a very busy one, and it was unlikely that there would be so many union matches for some years. Kir H. L. Berney pointed out that the Plains clubs considered that the Poland Cup matches caused top much interference with the club games. Mr Hodson mentioned that Hauraki 'Plains had challenged for the Peace, and Birch cups, and thus aggravated the position. Mr Silcock pointed out that the Poland competition could be reduced to one round, and the sub-unions

which desired it could arrange interunion matches. Mr Lockyer said that the Piako Union had discussed the matter and had instructed him to support the two rounds. Mr Callaghan moved that the matter be deferred until the next meeting, when the Waihi Union would be in a position to state whether it would be taking part i.n the competition. Seconded by Mr Me.ttam and carried. It was agreed that in any case the matches would not commence before the second Saturday in June. SCHOOL COMPETITION. Mr Callaghan congratulated the Primary Schools team which had won the Northern Roller Mills Shield, and advocated that the Thames Valley Union do more to encourage sehoool football than it had done in the past. Mr McPherson, headmaster of the Waihi District High School and representative of the. Thames Valley Primary Schools Union, also advocated an organised competition for some definite trophy. The matter was generally supported, and the opinion was expressed that the donation of a trophy would be gratefully received. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. The delegate to the N.Z. Rugby Union was instructed to endeavour to arrange return matches with the teams played by the touring team last season, and also with the Waikato Union. DISQUALIFICATION. The Piako Union wrote seeking the lifting of the disqualification of H. Manning and .E. Mulgrew.—Referred to the delegate to the N.Z. Rugby Union with a favourable recommendation. INSURANCE OF PLAYERS. The Manawatu-Horowhenua Rugby Union advised that it was urging the N.Z. Rugby Union to consider the advisability of establishing a Dominion insurance scheme for Rugby footballers.—Referred to delegate with instructions to support. A THAMES DEBT 1 . • The delegate the N.Z. Rugby Union was instructed to uraw attention to the fact that in the annual report of the N.Z. Union the Thames Valley Rugby Union was shown to be indebted to the e.xtent of £lOOO. This money was owing by tibe Thames Union.
