Information is to hand that Constable J. Dawson, of Thames, is under transfer to Paeroa as an additional policeman for the town. Mr Dawson is due to take, up his duties here next week.
On Sunday last shooting on the Awaiti was plainly heard at Paeroa. Upon making inquiries it was learned that on one particular lagoon large numbers of duck rose when the- shooting commenced. It is to be regretted that such unsportsman-like practices have- been resorted to, and it is to be hoped that the ranger will be able to bring the culprits to book.
Effect is now being given to Cabinet’s decision to restrict the flow of immigration, as far as arrivals in New Zealand are concerned, during May, June,'July, and August—the four winter months. During that period the migrants will consist of separated families and domestic servants. This restriction represents a reduction of practically 75 per cent. The next two vessels to arrive, the Mataroa and the Arawa, which arc due at Auckland on May 2 and May 7 -respectively, are full, as the original contracts for accommodation had been completed. The prospective migrants had disposed of their homes and made, all arrangements to travel. In those two cases the contracts h,avc been observed in their entirety.
The receipts received by the Paeroa Borough Council during the year from heavy traffic fe.es under theMotor Vehicles Act, totalled £355 Ils Id, of which amount approximately £201) will be retained and the balance paid into the pool of the No. 3 Highways District. The licenses under bylaws show an increase of £7O Os 6d over the preceding year.
The Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey Club held a most successful dance and euchre tournament at the Gaiety Theatre last night. The decorations were effectively carried out in greenery and the black and white colours of the club. The dance music, supplied by the Waihi Dixie Boys’ Orchestra, was thoroughly enjoyed by the large number of dancers. The winners of the euchre tournament were: Mrs Loane first, and Mrs J. White second ; while the. men’s prizes were won by Messrs W. Radford first, and Mr T. Wilkins second. The booby prizes went to Mrs J. Forrest and Mr. L. Gibb.
A petition .asking for the establishment of a direct mai.l service, between Thames and Kerepeehi by -means of Messrs White and Sons’ ’bus has been deposited at the Kerepeehi post office by the driver of the ’bus for the- signature of residents. The. preamble alleges that it is sometimes three days before letters reach their destination via Paeroa.
The party of Kerepeehi and Netherton. men. who went deep-sea fishing at Mercury Bay last Christmas made another excursion during the Easter holidays, and though no big fish were caught they found the bay full of small fish. The party call themselves the “Kerepeehi and Netherton Fishing Club,” and have appointed Mr JJohnson president, Mr S. Hines vicepresident, and Mr J, Murdock secretary. At present, there are ten members. The party left the Plains, on Good Friday and travelled Iji two cars, using the new road from Tapu. The grades were found to be good and tlie scenery magnificent, but the road surface iwas very rough. At Mercury Bay excellent accommodation is available, and launches and fishing gear can be hired, as the people are endeavouring to attract fishermen. The Paeroa Boy Scouts’ Brass Band, comprising 19 members,, made its first official appearance on Monday afternoon on the Anzac Day parade. In addition to assisting with the march music from tire drill-shed to the domain the band contributed the hymn “Christians awake,” followed by the old hundredth psalm, at the conclusion of the Cominemor.ation Service at the domain. Much favourable comment was heard with regard to the band, and it was generally agreed that as time went on Paeroa would have a welcome addition to the musical life of the town. Too much credit cannot be given to Mr G. Fallon, who has undertaken voluntarily the instruction of the members. The progress made in a fe,w short months reflects the greatest credit on the patience ami sound tuition given by Mr Fallon, and also on the enthusiasm of the boys.
At a preliminary meeting held in Paeroa of persons interested in economic science it was resolved to form an Economic Science Students’ Association for mutual education in social and kindred sciences. It was proposed that a debate should if possible be arranged on the proposition “That industrial inventions and mechanical appliances have more influence over human conduct than the press, the politician, or the pulpits.” Mr E. N. Davies was appointed bon. secretary pro tern.
Mr G. McKenzie was in Paeroa today making arrangements for Staig’s Amusements, which is opening here on Wednesday night next. Watch this paper for further particulars.*
The official recount of the votes recorded at Wednesday’s elections was held yesterday afternoon by the Returning Officer (Mr W. C. Alexander), and Mr R. AV. Evans. There were several alterations, the most noticeable being that Cr. P. E. Brenan’s lead was increased by six, votes. Councillors E. Edwards, AV. Turner, and J. Pinder gained two votes extra each, and Cr. Porritt one vote. The unsuccessful candidate, Mr R. B. Dunlop, lost one vote from his total.
