Probably both applicants had been of the opinion that sand was available ami could be pm chased, as had been done elsewhere, at under Is per cubic yard, but the assistant chief engineer of tlie Public Works Department explained that as there was only a lir.iited amount of sand available where the dredge was then working it would be necessary to shift it, and this overhead cost would increase the cost to at least 3s 6d a yard, which would probably be more than the settler would pay. However, it might be found possible to let the school committee have some of the sand already pumped, and the committee should approach the resident engineer.
