“THE NEW ZEALANDER?’ TOURS.
LOCAL POLITICS AND BUSINESS-
In the April issue of “The New Zealander,” a monthly paper published in Auckland with the idea of promoting loyalty and the. use of New Zealand and British Empire products, are many matters of interest to or concerning this district. The urgent need in New Zealand of having in office as Mayors only men who approve of the. policy of promoting the sale of New Zealand and British Empire goods is the reason for a special note on some of the candidates offering. Amongst those who subscribe to the policy of the paper and who are therefore commended to the attention of voters are Mr AV. Marshall (of Paeroa),, Mr AV. M. AVallnutt (of AVaihi), and Mr RCoulter (of Te Aroha). On the Thames mayoral election the paper is silent.
Concerning Mr AV. Marshall, the present Mayor of Paeroa, the paper states that he is a man of the highest standing, acknowledged by all in Paeroa as a successful and most acceptable public man. 'He has an excellent public record, and is with as, all square, on the urgent necessity of unfailingly supporting the sale and purchase of New Zealand and British Empire goods. AVe, therefore, very cordially ask all cur readers and others in Paeroa to vote for Mr William Marshall at the mayoral election. PLAINS TOAVNSHIPS. The editor-canvasser of the paper passed through the Plains last month, and thus records his observations and opinions :— Ngatea is situated on the Hauraki Plains, ahd without any doubt will one day be. a town of 4060 or 5000 people. The district around is most fertile, although a tremendous amount of work has yet to be done ; but one day it will be. done, and Ngatea will be an important agricultural centre. He then comments in a very favourable apd flattering manner on the businesses conducted by Mr R. Hastings, Miss E. N. Ely, Mr J. Terrill, Messrs H. and A. Dent, Messrs AV. and V. Montgomery, Mr AV. E. McKay, and Mr AV. G. Hayward, the whole occupying half a column. Perhaps the other six business firms did npt subscribe to his journal for they are not mentioned.
Concerning Turua he comments that “it is a small township between Thames and Ngatea, and is pleasantly situated. The large business in Turua Is done by Mr J. T. Davies, who is the able, and genial manager of Messrs Bagnall’s stores ; by Mr Williams, the baker ; and by Mr C. Scott, the butcher; all of whom give the best of services and sell the best of goods at moderate prices.” No mention is made of the other seven business houses. Kerepeehi is not mentioned at all.
