Until last week a period of several months had lapsed since the last travelling entertainment had visited the Plains. Within the past few days the Plains has been visited by two shows, and a circus, and at some places their dates have clashed. On Monday evening the circus was at Kerepeehi, and a hypnotist was prepared to give an entertainment in the hall. However, so great was the attraction of the circus that not one person went near the hall, while the attendance at the tent show surprised everyone by its extent.
Referring to the remarks made by the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) at last Wednesday’s meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce, and reported in our Issue of Friday last, the Mayor alleges in the course of a letter to the Editor that a correct interpretation of his attitude on the proposal to raise a loan for municipal swimming baths was not given. In explanation he now states: “In my opinion the best that can be hoped for, unless there is a substantial increase in population, is that the income may balance the working expenses, leaving the collection of a rate necessary to cover interest and sinking fund on the loan ; and in view of the financial stress, and the increasing burden of rates, I could not go so far as to say that ‘I sincerely hope that the proposal will be carried.’ ”
Dr. F. Howard Taylor and Mrs Taylor, Paeroa Presbyterian Church, Friday, April 8, 3 p.m. and 7.30 p.m,®

The Hauraki Plains has been responsible for much legislation by Parliament in the past, and will possibly be responsible for more. The recent amalgamation of the Hauraki and Horahia drainage boards drew the attention of the Internal Affairs Department to a deficiency in the Act concerning the procedure to be adopted between the time the amalgamating boards go out of office and the new board is elected, and the Undersecretary of the department has mentioned that amending legislation will be necessary.
In reply to Mr J. W. McCormick the chief engineer (Mr N. G. McLeod) stated at yesterday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board, that so far as the board was concerned it offered no objection to the erection of a telephone wire along power lines. The Post and Telegraph Department, however, had regulations giwerning the matter, and in the interests of its service it did not approve.
