Advice has been received that His Excellency the Governqr-General has been pleased to authorise Messrs. W. Marshall and H. J, Hare, J’s.P., of Paeroa, to exercise jurisdiction in the Children’s Court under the Child Welfare Act.

Reference to the late engineer to the Ohinemuri County Council was made by the county chairman (Cr. H. M. Cormett) prior to responding to the toast o£ “Local Bodies” at the Waikin 0 Old Boys’ Association reunion on Wednesday evening. There was no part of the county that knew the late Mr E. Shaw so well as Waikino, Cr. Corbett said. During his term on the council he had many opportunities to become familiar with Mr Shaw’s career. He had died in harness, having the respect of the whole county.

The .following, vital statistics for the Borough of Paeroa for the month of March have been supplied by the Local registrar (Mr W. E. Ward), the figures for the corresponding month of last year being given in parenthesis : Births, 9 (S) ; deaths, 1 (2) ; marriages, 0 (0). Figures for the quarter are : Births, 22 (24) ; deaths, 2 (3) ; marrfages, 3 (1).

That Waikino should be known as the capital of the County of Ohinemuri was the assertion of Cr. Corbett, county chairman, at the Waikino Old Boys’ Association on Wednesday evening. He pointed out that it was actually the largest town within the county, though it was only on the day of the Old Boys’ reunion that it was realised. Cr. Mason, the Waikino riding representative, who was the next speaker, said that the county chairman would remember this when application for money for the Waikino riding came before the council.

The Kerepeehi Ladies’ Hockey Club is making preparations for the coming season, and it is reported that a meeting of members was held this week for the purpose of deciding wnatcoloured jumpers and skirts would be worn this winter. The colours adopted were fawn and navy. The club will probably hold a dance in the near future. .

Timely notice of the fiftieth anniversary of the constitution of the County of Ohinemuri on November 17, 1885, was given by Cr. H. M. Corbett, chairman of the County Council, at the Waikino Old Boys" Association reunion on Wednesday evening, when he expressed the hope that those in authority in eight years.’ time would take steps to fittingly celebrate the occasion.

The rain gauge at the Lands Office, Kerepeehi, proves that during the past month the rainfall considerably exceeded the normal amount- A total of 5.72 inches was recorded, there being a fall on sixteen days. ■ The average rainfall for the month of March during the last fourteen years is 3.77 inches, and only on two occasions in that period has last month’s total been exceeded—in the years 1924 and 1915. Over an inch and a-half of rain fell on two days during the month, and for the eight-day period from the 16th to the 23rd the fall was 4.16 inches. So far .this year there have been 13.59 inches of rain, a total that has not been exceeded since 1922 and only just equalled in 1915.

The. monthly sitting of the Paeroa Magistrate’s Court will take place on Monday morning next, when Mr F. W. Platts will preside.
