OBITUARY.

MRS. SARAH MORRISON.

The sudden death of Mrs Sarah Morrison, of Hikutaia, which occurred on her way from Matamata to Paeroa on March 17, came as a great shock to her wide circle of friends. Born in Bally water, near Belfast, Ireland, 84 years ago, deceased arrived in Auckland with - her husband, the late Mr John Morrison, and small son (Hugh) by the sailing vessel Maori 69 years ago. After spending a few days at Auckland the party journeyed by a small sailer to Thames, where deceased’s husband engaged in mining activities, and later managed the Kelly claim for three years. At the end of that time the family removed to Puriri, where with an old shipmate named Robert Kelly, a block of land totalling 900 acres was taken up and farmed for 17 years. About 40 years ago the family settled at Hikutaia, where they have remained ever since. During the war period the late Mrs Morrison, who was affectionately regarded as the Mother of Hikutaia, was an ardent worker, and her activities on behalf o'f the soldiers from the district have given many a “digger” cause t<> remember deceased with gratitude. In matters pertaining to the welfare and advancement of Hikutaia and district deceased always took tile greatest interest, and was ever ready to help a deserving cause. Barring far impaired eyesight, deceased enjoyed wonderfully good health. Following the demise of her husband about 15 years ago the late Mrs Morrison lived with her married 3!ons and daughters in turn. Of a family of nine sons and three daughters eight are left to mourn her loss, namely: Mesdames S. McMahon (Auckland), G. Davies (Arapuni), and Messrs Hugh, R. R., John, W. K., Malcolm, and H. R. Morrison, There are also 37 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The love and esteem in which deceased vzas held was clearly evident in the number of floral, tributes which were received. The funeral, which took place at Pukerimu Cemetery, Paeroa, on Sunday afternoon, was very largely attended, the Rev. J. Lowden conducting the last solemn rites.
