LONDON SPREADS OUT.

FEWER LIVING IN CENTRES. Landon is becoming more and more a huge workshop, and less and less a place to live in. In a statistical .abstract just issued by the London County Council it is pointed out that although in 1801 there were 128,129 people living in tile city of Landon there were, it is estimated, only 13,520 last year. Yet into the city’s one square mile were crowded from outside districts — even in 1921—more than 4'20,000 people every business day. But while the city’s residential population is dwindling every year that of the administrative county of London, which embraces teh metropolitan boroughs has increased from 950,310 in 1801 to, it is. estimated, 4,615,400 at the present time. The population of Greater London in 1921 was nearly 7% millions. Londoners are much healthier. There has been a 'fall in the death rate from 23.4 per 1000 in 1846 to 11.9 in 1925, and the figures of infantile .mortality show an even greater reduction. But London’s birth rate is falling—in 1920 births in the County of London totalled 120,529, but in 1925 there were only 82,401. Since 1923 there has. been a gradual increase in the number Of marriages, but there has been a great falling off since 1919, when the total was 50,222. In 1925 there were 39,679 marriages.
