THAMES HOSPITAL.

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Monday, the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) presiding over the following: Messrs J. W. Danby, W. J. Hall, A. R. Robinson, J. Lapge, P. E. Brenan, E. L. Walton, C. W. Parfitt, and the secretary (Mr G. Tonge). AMALGAMATION. The Hon. J. A. Young, Minister for Health, advised that Dr. Valintine would shortly visit Waihi and call a conference of delegates from the Thames and Waihi boards to discuss the question of amalgamation. HOUSE SURGEON. The Director-General o'f Health advised the department’s approval of the appointment of Dr. Phyllis Moir as house surgeon. DIAMOND JUBILEE. Messrs Rowe and Lange were appointed to represent the board on the general committee in connection with the forthcoming diamond jubilee celebrations of the opening of the Thames goldfields. AMBULANCE. The Thames Trotting Club asked for the presence of .the board’s ambulance at Parawai on the occasion of its annual meeting on March 26. The application was granted, together with a similar request from the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for its meeting on March 17 and 19. sanatoria vacancies. The Health Department advised vacancies at the Government, sanatoria as follows : Pukepra, 87 ; Queen Mary, 18 ; Otaki, 7. MEETING A DEBT. A Wharepoa resident wrote to the effect that he was unable to meet a debt to the board of £3l, and advised the board to take proceedings to attach the land he was. occupying. As there was every prospect of his being evicted by a second mortgagee, he thought the board should secure its debt. The matter was referred to the secretary for a report, to the next meeting. AID FOR COUNTRY. The Hauraki Ladies’ - Benevolent Society was granted the usual payment of £lO. WAIKINO REUNION. The Waikino Old Boys.’ Association invited the board to attend a reunion at Waikino on March 30. Messrs Robinson and Kennedy were deputed to represent the board. DRAINAGE. The tender of C. W- Potterton of £206 for connecting the hospital with the borough drainage system was accepted. The only other tender was £349, also from a Thames contractor. COMMITTEE®. Committees appointed for. the month were as follows: Hospital, Messrs C. W. Kennedy and E. L. Walton ; Homes, a special local committee to report on certain matters tn the April meeting. HOSPITALS’ CONFERENCE. The. secretary reported at length on the recent hospitals conference held at Christchurch, and the official report from the executive o'f the Hospital Boards’ Association was also tabled. Mr Danby asked the chairman if tihe conferences served any good purpose. The chairman replied that they did* but the matters did not go far enoughHe would like to see all the hospitals in the Dominion graded on a definite basis in order to establish a system that could be universally applied. Mr Danby contended that hospitals were already graded, and instanced several anomalies. The chairman explained that such instances as. quoted would be overcome by grading according to districts and generally standardising the system. In reply to Mr Lange the chairman said that he thought a salary of £9O only was paid in several instances to * house surgeons, notably at Dunedin.
