SCHOOL PICNIC.
GATHERING AT RACECOURSE, CHILDREN’S DAY OUT. One of the outstanding days of the year in the eyes of the school children is the annual school picnic. Owing to the lack of finance the Paeroa District High School Committee found it impossible to take the children to o,ne of the beaches this year. Instead, the committee combined its efforts with those of the headmaster (Mr G. H. Taylor) and his staff and the annual gathering, by permission from the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, was held at the racecourse on Friday last.
Ideal weather prevailed, and at mid-day over 500 children, as well as a large; number cf parents and friends, were present. Races were held throughout the day, and the competitive spirit resulted in the majority of children winning a prize. Those who were not successful were compensated in the lolly scrambles and balloon contests which were held during the afternoon. It was the children’s day out, and as such the promoters made every endeavour, to see that every child had a happy time, and .that the day was made memorable and distinctive ’from the ordinary routine of school life.
