PLAINS TENNIS.

THE HANDICAP TOURNAMENTS.

LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES.

Many of the matches in the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s handicap tournament were played at Ngatea on Saturday last. The weather was good, though dull and dowdy conditions prevailed during the morning and there were a few very light showers, but not sufficient to interfere with the play.

The programme was a little late in commencing :; u account of the absence of some competitors, but under the able management of Mr A. RVowles the 'four courts were kept engaged until late in the afternoon and all the matches set, down for the day were decided.

Some very line tennis was witnessed as the general standard has improved very considerably of late. With the junior players the improvement is particularly noticeable, and next season will probably see many changes in the ladder. There can be no doubt of the success of the policy of playing the competitions at one centre. The entries, this season edipsed those of previous years, and many of the players present at Ngatea as spectators, have stated that they would 'have entered the various competitions had they realised the benefit o'f centralisation. The games set down for decision on Saturday were the ladies’ singles and doubles and part of the men’s singles and doubles, but for various reasons some of the matches were not played. Where sickness was the cause o'f nonattendance the games were postponed until to-day, but in most of the other cases a forfeit was sustained.
