THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, MARCH 7, 1925. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

In the absence of a vicar of the parish the Ven. Archdeacon Cowie, elf Hamilton, has kindly consented to deliver a series of Lenten addresses in St. Paul’s Church every Wednesday evening until Holy Week, and to celebrate the Holy Communion each Thursday mcirning. The evening service will be at 7.30, and the celebration at, 7 a.m., and the first of the series will be held this week. It is hoped that a large number of parishioners will avail themselves of this opportunity of fulfilling their Lenten duty, as pointed out to them in the Bishop’s Pastoral, read in all the churches on Quinquagesima Sunday.

T.<r being drunk in the main street on Saturday afternoon a first offender, who did not appear, was convicted and ordered to forfeit iris bail of £1 by Mr W. Marshall, J.P., at the local Police Court this morning.

Mr H. D. Bedford, Owharoa, has a boring plant on his property at Owharoa, and is endeavouring to locate the famous Mile of Fortune and other Owharoa loads on the northern trend towards Waitekauri.

The death of the late Albert Moore and Horace Alexander Moore his son, bring back a recollection .that they were very old residents of Paeroa. Mr Albert Moore died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr J. E. Hunt, who will ])c remembered in connection with Mr W. J. Ellis. Horace passed away at Greymciuth on the 17th of last month, while his father died op the 4th of this month. The late Mr A. Moore lived at Mackaytown for many years, and Horace was a wellknown figure in the town amongst the boys and footballers.

A very pleasant dance was held in the Ngatea Hall on Wednesday evening in aid of the 'funds of the Ngatea Cricket Club, There were about forty couples present, and a pleasant time was spent until the early hours. A progressive euchre tournament was held, the prize winners being Miss. Irwin, Airs Terrill, Mr D. Waite, and Mi C. Molloy, and for the sake of novelty the “booby” prizes, were given to tlie' winners and the first prizes to those who had won least games.

For the first time at Paeroa a wireless church service was listened to at St. Paul’s Anglican Church last evening. A large congregation assembled to listen in to the Evensong service, which was broadcasted from St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland, last night, at which, service the Bishop of London preached the sermon. The prayeis and lessons were read by tlie Archbishop o'f New Zealand, assisted by Canon James. Using a Gilfilian receiving set, with a Musicone loud-speaker, on a 420-metres wave, Mr F. Hayward was responsible for the service being given to the iocal congregation. The novelty of having no preacher or organist, and yet be able to follow the whole service and join in the hymns and prayers was one not previously experienced by many of the congregation. So far as the choral part the service was concerned the whole proceedings could be heard and followed very clearly. Unfortunately when it came to the sermon t.he conditions were fiPt so 'favourable, as the Bishop was not heard distinctly through his address.
