LORRY HORSES BOLT.
CAREER DOWN MAIN STREET. NO DAMAGE RESULTS. Some excitement was occasioned in the main street of Paeroa early yesterday afternoon. Apparently the annual race meeting feeling was to the fore in a pair of horses attached to a light lorry owned and driven by Mr G. McKee. It appears that Mr McKee was delivering seme goods in Belmont Road, and had left his team momentarily while he went into a business establishment near this office. For some reason the horses became frightened and bolted up the street towards the Public Works Office. Travelling at, a hand-gallop, the vehicle struck a cart, the property of Messrs. Short Bros, and driven by Mr R. Nield, a glancing blow, but not sufficiently hard t<> check the runaway.
The traffic in Normanby Road was fairly heavy at the time, but by great good luck the team safely negotiated the maze without accident. Early in the flight several persons made an attempt to stop the anima’s, but the pace set by them frustrated the effort. When nearing the Arney Street, intersection the team slackened down a little, and Mr E. P. Fathers rushed across the street and succeeded in bringing the runaway to a standstill. By great good fortune no one was hurt, and the horses and vehicle escaped damage.
