The oppressive weather conditions have had a noticeable effect on the health of the men of the Ist Battalion, Auckland Regiment, who are in training at Hopu Hopu (states Wednesday’s Waikato Times). Over 120 men paraded sick yesterday morning. A large portion of these men have been unable to attend the daily parades and have been confined to their tents with various summer co mplaints and influenza, while badly sunburnt arms have caused a good deal of discomfort. It was found advisable to evacuate a batch of territorials to Auckland, where several were admitted to the hospital for treatment, and one man was also admitted to the Waikato Hospital. The camp authorities have decided to give the men more frequent spells during the hot hours.

An important sale of timber and builder’s plant ,etc., is to be conducted at Paeroa to-morrow by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co. on account of Messrs Robinson and Beagley. Full particulars of the sale are advertised.
The Mayor o'f Waihi (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) has forwarded a telegram to Mr, A. M. Samuel, M.P., who is in
Wellington, with regard to unemployment in Waihi. In his wire the Mayor points out that over 50 men have registered their names, and that in. addition 40 men, mostly Waihi residents, are to be put off the railway construction works at, Athenree. Men are also being discharged from the Armstrong, Whitworth works, so that the position is likely to be acute. Mr Wallnutt is urging Mr Samuel to stress upon the Minister of Public Works the need for providing relief works.
The first workmen engaged in the erection of the h°tel building for Mrs M. B. Montgomery at the corner o’f Hamilton and Avenue roads, Morrinsville, in the Ohinemuri electorate' commenced operations last, week, clearing the ground and preparing it for the actual construction work. It is expected that, the hotel will be completed by June.
At the last, meeting of the Waihi Borough Council the question of “smoko” for the outdoor workers was introduced, and it was decided that the men be given a spell of 10 minutes in the forenoon and 10 minutes in the afternoon.
At the Waihi Police Court yesterday morning Anthony McShane (47)., a carpenter, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person. SeniorSergeant Maclean, pointing to accused, who appeared to be on the verge of delirium tremens, said the man was in a shocking state. He had spent six weeks in Katikati, and was arrested by two natives. Accused was the victim of alcohol, and (had been drinking methylated spirits. Accused said he had been suffering from insomnia, and had taken methylated spirits to induce sleep. The Bench, in imposing a sentence of one month’s imprisonment at Auckland, said that the prisoner would receive proper treatment.
On February 2 a paragraph was published to the effect that the Te Aroha District Co-operative Dairy Company had been dissolved and had been struck off the Register of Companies. It should be explained that this company has nothing whatever to do with the present Te Aroha Dairy Company which is on a sounder footing and has a bigger output than ever. The company struck off the register was the old Te Aroha District Co-operative Dairy Company, which built the Waihou factory.
Particulars of the issue of holiday excursion tickets and train arrangements in connection with the Royal visit, the. Otahuhu Trott,ing Club’s meeting at Auckland on February 19 and 23,- and the Te Aroha races at Herriesville on February 26 and 28 are advertised in this issue.
A very successful dance and progressive euchre tournament was held in the Kerepeehi Hall on Wednesday evening. The function was arranged to augment the Church of England building fund, and the attendance was very large, dancers coming from all parts of the county. Music was supplied by Messrs Ludlow and King, of. Ngatea, and was acknowledged to be surprisingly good.
