THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1927. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The monthly sitting of the local Magistrate’s Court is to be held before Mr F. W. Platts., S.M., tomorrow. The presence of Mr C. E. Macmillan, M.P. tor Tauranga, in- Waihi last week was responsible for the. renewal of a report to the effect that a readjustment of electoral boundaries, in the direction of having Waihi included in the Tauranga electorate, was more than probable before next general elections. When the late Sir Wiliam Herries represented the Bay of Plenty in 1906 Waihi was then a portion of that electorate. In the election of that year Mr Herries was opposed by a Waihi resident —Mr Joseph Foster —and the contest resulted in a close finish, Mr Herries’ majority being 199. The Waihi voting was: Foster 1620, Herries. 841.

The Hauraki Plains representative, cricketers were defeated by Thames at Thames on Saturday lafejt. Plains batted firsti ,and knocked up 51 runs in the flr.st. innings, and: 92 in he second., while Thames, secured 112 runs in the first innings and 45 for one wicket at the call of time. In the “B” grade match Thames secured 82 runs, and the Hauraki Plains 62 in the flrstj-innings, and Thames played to time, securing 87 'runs. There was one exciting finish at the sports at Bideford which is worthy of recording (states the "Wairarapa Age”). One of the events on the programme was .the orange race, which consists of galloping 100yds on horseback with afull plate of oranges, encircling two pegs en route, and returning to the, starting post, the competitor with the greatest number of oranges “aboard” and covering the course in the fastest time jrinning the prize. There were thirty-two competitors, and the last pair were old antagonists. A pair of galloping thoroughbreds finished neck and neck with all the oranges intact, and in swerving to avoid the crowd at the winning post they swung straight for a jump which had befell erected on a stiff course. Both riders continued on over the brush and logs, and, completing the course, they again passed the winning pest abreast, where the oranges were scattered at the feet of the crowd. As a feat o'f brilliant and graceful horsemanship the event was warmly applauded by the large and critical audience.

It is interesting to a. newspaper man to notice the way his articles are reproduced in other newspapers. For instance* a week or sc ago an article on the menace of the growth of tall fescue on the Hauraki Plains was written by one of the staff of this paper. It] was re-written by the “Thames Star” and the Thames correspondent of the Auckland morning paper telegraphed that article to his paper, while the Paeroa correspondent of the Auckland evening paper telegraphed another paraphrase. Now the Thames paper has 'reprinted the Auckland Star’s version.

An ex-pupil of the Paeroa District High School, Duncan Fleming* son of Mr W. Fleming, Paeroa, was among the 'successful pupils who completed the matriculation examination at the Mt. Albert Grammar School, Auckland.
