DRUNK AND DISORDERLY

AN OLD OFFENDER CHARGED.

FIVE WEEKS’ IMPRISONMENT.

At the Paeroa Police Court this monring before Messra F. E. Flatt and B. Gwilliam, J’s,P., a middle-aged

man named Thomas Cavanagh,, with a number of aliases, was charged with drunkenness in Normanby Road yesterday afternoon. A second charge of using obscene language was also preferred. Defendant pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily.

Constable McClinchy stated that defendant had appeared before tne Court on the first day of this month. He was then sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. On being released from the Thames gaol he had come straight back to Paeroa. He was in the act of committing an indecent act outside an hotel yesterday when witness remonstrated with him. It, was at that time that defendant, who was very drunk, used the language complained of. Defendant had a lengthy list of previous convictions, and had made a nuisance of himself while, at Paeroa.

In reply to the Bench defendant said that he had come back to Paeroa to collect his- swag. He had hot intended to get into difficulties again, and was sorry for the trouble he had given. He was willing to work, but had never been given a chance. The Bench pointed out that defendant had taken up a wrong attitude, and had had many chances. The language complained of was disgusting in the extreme, and if defendant got, his desserts he. would serve 12 months in prison. On the charge c’f drunkenness he would be convicted and fined 10s, in default seven days’ imprisonment. On the charge of using obscene language he would be convicted and fined £5, in default, one month’s imprisonment with hard labour, the sentences to be 1 cumulative.

Defendant, was advised to turn over a new leaf when he was released from gaol, and not to come near Paeroa again.

Defendant replied : “Right yer are yer Honour, I’ll not come back again. Five weeks, Eh ?”
