FIRE WORKS DISPLAY.
ATHLETIC CLUB’S ENTERPRISE. DENTAL CLINIC FUND TO SHARE. In connection with the campaign to raise funds for .the establishment of a dental clinic, a deputation from the Paeroa Athletic Club, comprising Messrs J. H. Walmsley and K. L. Slyfield, waited upon the Paeroa District High School Committee at its mee< ing on Wednesday night and suggested a fireworks display. In placing the proposal before the committee Mr Walmsley explained that the club had been in touch with a firm which had staged fireworks demonstrations, throughout the Dominion. The firm would visit Paeroa and give a demonstration to the value of a certain price, according to the wishes of the organisation engaging it. Arrangements had been made by the club to engage the firm to give a demonstration on Thursday night, March 17 next. The. club would run the whole thing, but if the school committee would give the undertaking its hearty support and assist the club on the night of the. exhibition the club in return would hand over half the net proceeds to go towards the dental clinic fund.
In support of Mr Walmsley .Mr Slyfield said it was estimated that the cost of giving the exhibition would be about £75. With efficient organisation and judicious publicity the. club, judging from the reports of other, organisations which had engaged the firm, would make it a financial success.
In reply to a member Mr Slyfield said that people who -anticipated seeing the exhibition from, say, Primrose Hill, and thus saving the price of admission to the domain, would be keenly disappointed. The display comprised for the most part set pieces, and it was necessary to be close to the exhibition, and on the same level. It had also been suggested to hold dancing on the green, and to have supper, available under the trees. The services of a good orchestra would be secured, and everything would be done to provide a good as well as a novel entertainment for the public. It was the intention oT the club to do all the publicity work, and also to shoulder the full responsibility of any loss that might occur. The public would be given a really good show, and the appeal for funds for the club and the school dental clinic .was, for good causes, and surely worthy of support. The club was desirous of knowing if it had the full backing and could rely o,n the co-operation and assistance of the committee. Mr J. McDonald said that he considered the suggestion an excellent one, and the committee should get behind the club and give the project a big push along. This view was also expressed by several members, who considered the action of the Athletic Club was a generous one, and well worthy of support.
The chairman (Mr C. H. Pascoe) expressed the committee’s appreciation, and intimated that the members were prepared to pledge themselves to do all' they possibly could to ensure success. A fine night was needed, and with the extra people Who were likely to be in Paeroa for the Ohinemuri races a record gathering of the public should be. present. It was resolved to set up a sub-com-mittee to go further into the matter with the Athletic Club and finalise arrangements.
