Flags were flown at half-mast on the local post office to-day tp mark the commencement of the ceremonies in connection with the funeral of the late Emperor of Japan.

After being laid up for some time with rheumatic influenza .at Auckland Mr A. M. Samuel, M. P., arrived at Paeroa yesterday afternoon. This morning he was busy on various maiters, and this atfernoon he is, meeting the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. O. J. Hawken) at Kerepeehi, where an inspection is to, be made of certain areas •of land. Leaving Kerepeehi, the Minister and Mr Samuel will meet some of the Awaiti settlers at Nethertou, when certain agricultural matters are to be discussed. To-morrow Mr Samuel will spend at Waihi and return to Paeroa in the evening. At .the invitation of ‘dhe directors of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., Mr Samuel will be one of the principal speakers at the official ceremony of opening tjhe new butter factory at Morrinsville on Wednesday. The rest of the week Mr Samuel expects to spend in various parts of the Ohinemuri electorate.

The granting of the license to the Royal Mail to-day will recall to the minds of many, particularly old residents, the late Mr George, Crosby, who was <|he genial “mine host” of the hotel for so many ye.ars. It. was back in 1894 that he built the Royal Mail, and held the license when nelicejise came into effect. It was undoubtedly the very capable way that this hotel was managed b.v him, ably assisted by his wife, that made the name of the Royal Mail so very popular. with no't only the travellers but the residents o'f the town and district. The same hearty welcome is to be continued by Mrs Crosby and her son Mat, who is to assist in its management*

As -he repairs to the bridge on the Waitakaruru-Pokeno section of the main highway have been completed, the. road is again open for traffic. This route is now to be preferred to, the Miranda-Mangatangi road, which was cut up badly by the traffic in the wet weather. The surface pl the highway, however, is very rough and hard on tyres.

Perfect summer weather prevailed locally during the week-eml, and the heat during the day-time was intense. Early yesterday morning a heavy pall o,f smoke and mist enveloped the town, but this quickly cleared and a searching hpt day followed. This morning was cloudy, and there were a couple o'f heavy showers, though of brief duration, .shortly after mid-day. A steady downpour would be particularly welcome at present.

The was a good yarding of cattle at the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Company’s. Ngatea sale on Friday last, and practically every hoo'f wag sold at satisfactory prices. Good dairy cows in cal'f broughj £7 10s, and others from £5 to £6 10s.; heifer calves brought £l, heifers and young cows from £5 10s. to £6 2s 6d, and others from £4 15s to £5 ss, Freshconditioned caws brought from £3 to £3 10s, and inferior cows from £1 10s to £2 ss. Two tooth ewes and withers sold at £1 Is, woolly lambs at from 13s. 6d t<?i 15s 6d, and cull lambs at from 8s 6d to 10s 6d. Heavy bulls changed hands at 'from £3 -'ss to £4 17s 6d, and others from £2 15s to £3 12s

At the meeting of the Hauraki A. and P. Association on Saturday night, on the .motion of the president (Mr. H. J. Hare), a vote df condolence was accorded Mr G. Buchanan in his| recent bereavement.
