COUNTY BOUNDARIES.
POSITION OF THAMES RIDINGS. OHINEMURI DECLINES ACTION. At a meeting o'f thE Ohinemuri County Council on December 21 last a deputation comprising Mr E. J. Smith, representing the Puriri Ratepayers’ Association, and Mr F. B. Burkhardt, . representing the Hikutaia Ratepayers’ Association, waiLEd upon the ; council and presented largely signed - petitions. The petitioners set out • that owing to the increasing burden ■ caused by excessive rates lEvied by the Thames County Council a request ; was made praying inat the <. .linemuri ’ County Council would consent to an l alteration of the existing county' boundaries under the provisions of.” section 14 of the Cciunt;ies Act. Tire deputation explained that in the event of the Ohinemuri County agreeing ■to take over the Puriri and Hrku-i taia ridings from the Thames County the ratepayers in thcisE ridings would not ask or expect the Ohinemuri County to shoulder ;he burden of the ratepayers. The chairman (Mr H. M. Corbett) accepted the pEtiiions and advised the deputation that a reply would be given when the council met in February.’
A< yesterday’s meeting of the OhinEmuri County Council the following resolution was moved by the chairman and carried without discussion:
“That a reply be sent to .the pEtitioners te, the effect that this council, after carEful consideration of the matter, cannot see its way to take any action in the direction asked for, and that the Thames County Council be advised tc this effect.”
