SWIMMING BATHS.
WATER SUPPLY FOR PAEROA. COUNTY COUNCIL FAVOURABLE. The, question of the provision o’f municipal swimming baths for Paeroa was brought under the notice of the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting yesterday by tjhe receipt of the following letter from the Paeroa Borough Council : — "This council has undEr consideration the matter of placing before its ratepayers a proposal to raise a loan to erect swimming baths. It would be necessary to change -he water once each weEk during the swimrtking season, and the amount of water required each time would be approximately 150,000 gallons. As your council controls the headworks of supply and provides the water for t)he borough’s requirements it is recognised that the proposal affects your council. Remembering shortages of water which have occurred in previous years when dry, summers have been Experienced, this council fears ‘tjhat there is a possibility that in similar instances there might be a shortage of water. This council, therefore, asks your council will- assist; to the extEnt of providing additional water at the headworks of the present supply. Possibly the best way to do this might) be to bring in the. adjacent creek. "In support of this request] it is pointed out that approximately 20 per cent, of the children attending ■schools in Paeroa are residents of your county, and my council would be delighted, if the baths are erected, to see arrangements made, for regular visits from the adjacEnt schools in your county. ‘‘We feel confident that this matter is a most desirable one in the interest of the general public, and we earnestly solicit the support of your council. “In view ( of thE fact that, it is hoped to take the poll on April 27, being tha date of the municipal elections, we would greatly appreciate your council’s early consideration.” The chairman (Mr H. M. Corbett) said that the mattEr required careful consideration. Extra expense would be entailed at the headworks, and it would be necessary to guard against any possibility of a shortage of water. Cr. A. R. Robinson said that during the driest spell there, was always a fair pressure o'f water at Paeroa The council’s water account had built up a satisfactory reserve, and he thought that an adequate supply should be given. Cr. F.,C. Hubbard said that,.he hoped the council would give its heartiest support to the Borough Council. Swimming baths were desirable at Paeroa, and almost a necessity, and he hoped ■the water committee would give its whole-hearted support and give thE Borough Council an adequate supply of water for baths at the lowest possible, cos/.
The matter was referred to the water committee to bring down a full report as early as possible.
