QUICKER TO WALK.
PEDESTRIAN BEATS MOTOR-CAR. NOVEL CONTEST IN LONDON. That it is quicker to walk asi far as possible in a straight line towards a given point on the outskirts of London than to ride was demonstrated when a pedestrian, taking a direct route, arrived before a motor-car which had to follow the congested western routes out of London. The. pedestrian was Mr T. E. Hammond, the Stock Exchange London-to-Brightpn walker, and the motorist was Colonel Vaugran-Morgan, the Conservative M.P. for Fulham, and chairman of the Western Exists-of-London Society. The contest, which was in two sections, started in North End Road, Mr Hammond walking in a, direct line to the river to Crabtree Wharf, where he was ‘ferried across, and continuing to a point half-way down the Castlenau Road, Barnes. The car took the circular route via North Ehd Road, the congested Hammersmith Read, and across Hammersmith Bridge,
The motor-car arrived at the point in Castlenau Road five minutes ahead of Mr Hammond.
On the second, section Mr Hammond set off for Chiswick Church, on Chiswick Mall, having to climb .fences and again be ferried over the river. The motorist took the devious route by road, arriving twelve minutes aftor Mr Hammond, who wag thus seven minuses to the good on the two journeys. Mr Hammond had to travel half a mile to reach the church, while the motorist had to. travel two miles.
The. demonstration was organised to show toe need for a n®>w road out oT London. The new route would involve the construction of three river bridges.
