SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.
PAEROA SUCCESSES.
RECORD NUMBER OF PASSES.
With the notification of the matriculation examination results it is worthy of note that the Paeroa District High School has established a iec: rd in the history of the school by the number of pupils that have gained successes.
During the last few years the secondary department at the school has been steadily increasing, andja greater degree of efficiency has, obtained To Mr E. G. Preston and Miss H. Taylor, the teachers in this department, hearty congratulations are due. By their careful tuition and personal interest and pride in their work the success of the pupils is due in no small measure. The headmaster (Mr G. H. Taylor), who is also a capable and painstaking teacher and a strong advocate of efficient secondary education, has also done a tremendous amount of work in building up this side of the school’s activities. It must be very gratifying to parents, as well as a distinct credit to the town, to realise that children can be thoroughly taught and efficiently equipped with knowledge sufficient to give them a good start in their careers. The following results will give a clear indication of th® successes achieved :— Matriculation examinations, held in December last: Full passes, Isabel M. Dare, Annie I. Southby, W. L. Marshall, a’ J. Flatt; completed partial pass,, Gwladys Gwilliam and Lena F. Williams. G. E. Taylor (Grammar) and A. North (University), ex-pupils of the school, also gained completed partial passes. At the. jupior national scholarships examination held in November last, Fred Dare, of the Paeroa District High School, gained a scholarship, while Muriel Mills, a pupil of th® ~ Kopu school till August last, when she removed to the Paeroa school, was also successful. TEACHERS’ “D” EXAMINATION. At the conclusion o'f a series of lectures delivered by Dr. T. G. Smith, under the auspices of the St. John’s Ambulance Association, the practical examination was conducted by Dr. W. W. Little, while the theory examination was supervised by Mr G. H. Taylor. The following candidates were successful in securing the First-aid . Certificate, there being no failures: First class, Miss Gwladys Gwilliam and Mr J. Conolly ; pass, Misses L. Williams, I. Dare, W. Nathan, and Mr W. Leach. By passing this examination Messrs Leach and Conolly are qualified to receive the Teachers’ “D” Certificate. PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATES. While the secondary department has established a record for the school, a creditable performance has been put up in the primary department. While a satisfactory percentage of children passed in the lower standards, the sixth standard pupils, who. were taught by Mr J. E. Bigelow, M.A., did exceptionally well in the proficiency examinations, which were held on December 7 last by Inspector H. McChesney. It is worthy of record that o'f 41 pupils presented for this examination 36 gained proficiency certificates, while 3 obtained competency certificates, and only two failed.
