A SERIOUS CHARGE.
ALLEGED CARNAL KNOWLEDGE. ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. A serious charge was preferred ;■ against a young man at the Magistrate’s Court, Paeroa, y®s,terday, before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M. Accused, Victor McKeown, farm labourer, Hikutaia, was before the Court to answer the charge of unlawfully carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16 years on September 30 last. Senior-Sergeant Maclean conducted the prosecution, and accused was represented by Mr E. J. Clendon. A plea of not guilty was ent®red. For the prosecution evidence was given by a local doctor, the girl in the case, her mother, a married sister, and a young lad who lives next door, to the girl’s parents. At the conclusion o'f the evidence for the prosecution Mr Clendon intimated that the defence would be reserved.
Accused was accordingly committed for trial at the Supreme Court, Auckland. Bail was allowed in one bond of £lOO, a condition of the bail being that accused should report to the police twice a week.
