BOWLING.

NIGHT CHALLENGE BUTTONS. TROPHIES CHANGE HANDS. . Keen interest* is bfiing taken in the night play at the Paeroa bowling green. After the heat and burden of the day a welcome respite is ; to be found on the green. Situated picturesquely as it is, the soft light of the huge, electric arcs add to the pretty and animated scene ia the cool of the evening. Afte.r withstanding a number of challenges the Englishmen, comprising L. C. Cane, C. H. Pascoe, T. H. Hale, and P. Williams (skip), were forced to lower their colours to the Scotmen, W. McCullay, W. Forrest, AV. Hamilton, and AV. Purdie (skip), on Monday night, and at the same time hand over the night-play challenge buttons. The game, which was considered by several to have been one of the best seen on the green in the evening for a long time, was keenly contested, but was won fairly comfortably by the "Kilties” by 23 points to 16. In the 21 heads Purdie’s team scored 10 times and AVilliams’ team on 11 occasions. On the 6th head the scores were 4 all, and on the 10th head both sides had scored 8 points. With a lead of three on the 17th head AVilliams tired to “upset the Kilties’ porridge bowl,” but he had bad luck, and the finish of the head saw the Scotsmen laying six up, thus increasing their lead to nine points. In the ■following four heads the Englishmen piled on four to their opponents’ two, and the game, ended in the Scotsmen’s favour by seven points. The greatest good humour prevailed, and the “barrack” between the teams and their supporters was in itself most entertaining and amusing.

The. next night match will probably be between the Scotsmen and a team of New Zealanders. BRENAN SHIELD MATCH. The final games in the B section of the Brenan Memorial Shield competition were concluded on Saturday afternoon, F. Marsh’s team winning. Following are the details :— R. Dowry', J. AVilkinson, L. Gibb, T. H. Hale (skip) 24, v. W. Barclay, J. Brocket, C. Olson, T. L. Williams (skip) 19 ; AV. Forrest, Perston, W. Power, P. AVilliams (skip) 22, v. J. McCrory, F. Hayward, H. Morland, AV. Purdie (skip) 12 ; J. McDonald, W. Chamberlain, C. Mettam, F. Marsh (skip) 49, v. G. Vowles, T. Black, A. Finnie, L. C. Cane, (skip) 12. GOLDFIELDS STARS. AVIN.FOR HIKUTAIA. For the first time since, its formation a team from the Hikutaia club has won the coveted Goldfields Stars by defeating Te Aroha on Saturday last. After beating Paeroa for the stars early this season the. Te Aroha team has successfully defended them against Waihi and Thames, only to lose them by the narrow margin of one point to Hikutaia. At the last Labour Bay tournament at Piieroa the Hikutaia team played off in the final game for the stars. The players comprising the Hikuta'a team on Saturday were C. Reid, M. M orison, AV. R. Morrison, and A. R. Robinson (skip), and the Te Aroha representatives were Childerhouse, Kriskovitch, Waddell, and . Bygrave (skip). After a close hardfought game the scores were Hikutaia 18, To Aroha 17. The. winners were the. recipients of widely extended congratulations. SOUTH AUCKLAND TOURNAMENT. The South Auckland Bowling Association’s annual tournament opened at Thames this morning, and will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Only 18 teams have entered Tor the tournament, but the small entries are accounted for by the fact that the Dominion tournament, held at Auckland, and which has only just concluded after three weeks’ play, has been the means of preventing a number of clubs from sending teams forward. The following have been select-, ed to represent the Paeroa club: E. Edwards, AV. J. Ellis, AV. J. Towers, and P. AVilliams (skip).
