A NOVEL RACE.
CANOE AND STEAMER. AN IMPROMPTU CONTEST. Reminiscent of earlier days in New Zealand, a Maori war canoe appeared on the Wanganui River on Monday last manned by 33 natives of .Parikino. To apyone not acquainted with the 'fact that the Maoris of the Wanganui district are enthusiastically preparing for the regatta the sight of an imposing war canoe paddled by a dusky crew must have been bizarre, but .the members, of the crew on this occasion were merely Parikino’s representatives at the regatta out for a practice trip. The natives first proceeded to Matahiwi, and later made a journey down to Parikino, a distance of something over 16 miles. The practice trip was evidently o'f considerable benefit, and constant paddling was maintained.
While the canoe was on the river a river steamer was passed, and an impromptu race ensued. The natives entered heartily into the contest, and their efforts proved so successful that the canoe is reported to have reached Parikino fully 15 minutes before the steamer.
