NEW POLICE UNIFORMS.

IMPROVEMENT IN HOT WEATHER.

ISSUE EXPECTED SHORTLY.

“On a day like this,” said Mir W. B. Mcllveney, Commissioner of Police, to a “Dominion” reporter, on Tuesday, “the present uniform worn by a constable is a killer. It is like a blanket. But there should be a great improvement in the new dress, and it should not be. long in arriving, as the buttons and badges are now on their way out from England.” The material for the new uniforms for the police force will be manufactured in Dunedin, and the shako will be. supplied by a Wellington fir,m. The badges will consist of the Royal coat-o'f-arms, supported by two fern leaves, and having at the bottom a scroll with the words “New Zealand Police Fore.” The new buttons will also be a distinct improvement on those now used, which have an unpeasant and expensive habit of going soft lil<® gelatine in wet or very hot weather.. They will be made of metal, surrounded by the words “New Zealand Police.” At night and in wet weather the; dark badges now in use will be worn.
