“DRIVE IT YOURSELF.”
NEW FORM OF TRANSPORTATION.
RENTING OF AUTOMOBILES.
New Zealand will shortly have, a new form of transportation, according te Major H. A. Yagle, <ff the Yellow Truck and Coach Company, a subsidiary of the General Motors. Corporation, who is at present visiting Wellington (states the "Dominion”). This new 'form of transportation, he explained, will embrace a system of automobiles for rent, driven by the renter, and for which the user, pa-’s only for the service used.
Major Yagle stated that this tem had spread to more than 300 cities in the United States and Canada, and that the service was being used by millions of persons yearly, both in business and 'for pleasure “An outstanding feature of this operation tending to slow and careful driving,” he added, "is the fact that the charge for the use of the vehicles is based on the number of miles travelled. Thus, there is always an incentive for the renter to drive at a moderate rate of speed, with corresponding economy in the cost df t.he use o'f the vehicle.”
The Hertz Sedan, the special car designed for the business, gives the operator many more features of superiority from the standpoint o'f safe driving than is available in the average vehicle, according to Major Yagle. To maintain a high standard, each machine is subjected to a careful inspection and Toad test each day.
Major Yagle, who has played a prominent part in the organisation of the service in the United States, will remain in New Zealand in order to supervise preliminary operations here.
