EXCITING EXPERIENCE.

ENCOUNTER WITH WILD BOAR. On Christinas Day Messrs E. Davenport and Clive Bolton were making the journey to the former’s homestead at the foot of the Rangitoto Hill, about 17 miles from Te Kuiti. When close to the farm a huge boar was found on the bridle track, and it refused to budge, showing an aggressive attitude. Having several dogs with them, they attacked the animal,, which, however, quickly retaliated, one of the dogs, receiving a deep gash in the jaw with the boar’s tusks, and another sustaining a similar injury on t,he flank. Mr Da venp;rt then managed to catch one of the monster’s hind legs, while Mr Bolton secured the other, and after half an hour’s struggle the animal was killed with a sheath knife. When the boar was hung up by its hind legs to a tree it measured 6ft from its heels to the tip of its: snout. Mr Davenport states that he lost

about 200 lambs this year through the depredations of the wild pigs. In -former years his losses in this; way were, small, as the pigs usually kept to the bush. The bush berries this year, however, on which the pigs rely for food, have been practically nonexistent, and they have come out into the open to forage.—Te Kuiti Chronicle.
